Discovering new talents is one of the best and most rewarding aspects of going back to school. Week one of Woven Design class was overwhelming to say the least. It had been 7 years since I was in school and having to learn how to set up a table loom along with having to organize binders/handouts, dealing with a locker that is way too small, and getting up at 6:30 am again was no small feat. Now that we are just past mid semester I am discovering that I really like weaving, I might even start to love it! Going into the course I knew that there were obvious similarities to sewing so I took comfort in those thoughts on the days where I just could not remember how to thread the eyes of the heddles on the loom (see photo for idea of the complexities).
Knowing that I only have a year at FIT I feel the need to really determine what it is that I am the best at and what I want to go after. I started thinking outside of the box: what if I went to live in Peru for a little while or even New Mexico and worked at a loom making fabrics for companies in NYC? I found this article on the National Geographic website:

It is a little outdated, but worth a read. So interesting how in the Inca villages have their own weave patterns that separate one village from another.
This may just be a dream right now... but I am going to start looking for a way to make it a reality.
