Rodarte

Last Saturday, despite the massive rain storm - a friend and I ventured out to the Cooper Hewitt museum to see the Rodarte show. Although it was small, it was worth it. Seeing the shoes that they designed with Nicholas Kirkwood and the macrame/leather work up close - was truly a treat! It was also interesting to see how many pieces have been worn by celebrities on the red carpet. There was a green and silver dress that was so intricate, I can not imagine that too many were made - so we may have been viewing the one that Reese Witherspoon wore.

The front room was light, airy, feminine, and filled with peach/pink fabrics. My favorite piece is the beige leather leggings with lattice work cut outs that zip all the way up the back. The back room of the installation (see photo) expertly translated the creepy feeling that the sisters wanted as a part of the Japanese horror films that inspired their collection. Broken and burned wood, holes in the flooring, burnt fabric, and shoes bolted to the floor. One of the things that the sisters do so well is this juxtaposition of pretty and edgy.

I was also very happy to see fashion designers showcased at a major NYC museum. Can't wait to see who they showcase next.
