Austrian Archaeologists work on the restoration of the Terrace Houses in Ephesus. The houses are representative of how the rich families lived during the Roman period. They were first built during the 1st Century B.C. Initial restoration of the houses began in 1960. They were composed of big open rooms surrounding a courtyard. Mosaics were preferred over marble for the flooring and the walls were plaster covered in fresco. Very little is left of the fresco walls, but the mosaics are breathtaking. It was amazing to be there on one of the days that the archaeologists were working.
